Practical Tips for Putting On Bridal and Prom Dresses
The Correct Order Matters
The sequence in which you put on the garments and accessories is extremely important:
Put on your underwear
Put on your shoes
Put on the hoop underskirt (if the dress includes one)
Put on the prom or bridal gown
Add hair accessories or, for brides, secure the veil
Put on gloves
If your dress includes a hoop underskirt, it is recommended to secure it at the waist (not the hips) with a double bow to ensure proper positioning and comfort.
Putting On the Dress
In most cases, assistance is needed. The helper should lift the dress from above while the wearer raises both arms, carefully protecting her hairstyle. Once the dress is pulled on, the wearer should place both hands at the waist and hold the dress securely.
Taller ladies may find it helpful to slightly squat while the dress is being pulled down into place.
Zippered Dresses
For dresses with a zipper, the helper should first fasten the small hook-and-eye closure (often called a “Paris hook”) at the top of the zipper. The matching piece is sometimes a discreet fabric loop designed to blend into the dress.
While holding the dress at the waist, the wearer gently pulls the fabric backward to allow the zipper to be closed. There is no need to rush — bridal and prom dresses are designed to fit snugly so they stay securely in place without slipping.
Once the zipper is fully closed, always fold down the zipper pull so it cannot slide down during wear.
Laced (Corset) Dresses
With corset-style dresses, the wearer holds the dress until the lacing begins. As the corset is gradually tightened, the dress becomes securely fitted to the body.
The corset can be laced either from top to bottom or bottom to top. In both cases, it should be tightened firmly and tied securely to ensure comfort and stability throughout the event.
Final Adjustments
After the dress is on, gently pull down any lining or underskirt fabric that may have caught during dressing, especially around the skirt area.
Once everything is in place, you can proceed with putting on the accessories.
